Two lenses – What you see vs what you go through

UI is the surface, UX is the whole path – and they bend each other. Beauty measurably changes how usable something feels; usability decides what beauty is allowed to do.

Think of a house. The walls, the door handles, the light switches, the colour of the paint – everything you can see and physically touch – that’s the UI. Whether the house works for the life you live in it – kitchen near the car park for grocery day, stairway safe at 2am, fuse box findable in a blackout – that’s the UX. You can paint a house beautifully and it can still be a miserable place to live. That gap is the whole reason these are two words.

UI is the tangible surface: type, colour, icons, buttons, layout, motion – the entire vocabulary The Eye gave you. UX is the entirety of the experience: whether the product solves a real problem, whether the path to it makes sense, how the person feels at each step – including parts that never appear on screen at all, like the onboarding email and the support reply.

Where “user experience” actually came from

The popular story: Don Norman invented the term at Apple in the early 1990s, wanting something broader than “interface” or “usability”. The honest version, from Norman’s own 2023 account, is better – he formed Apple’s “User Experience Architect’s Office” with two colleagues and credits the group (“I do not know how we arrived at the name”), then later discovered designer Brenda Laurel had used the exact phrase in 1986, in a book he himself co-edited. His reaction, verbatim: “Did the phrase ‘User Experience’ come from Brenda, and then resonate in my mind until being resurrected at Apple? That sounds very plausible to me.” Norman made the term mainstream; he’s the first to say he may not have made it up. The width was the point either way: everything the person experiences, not just the screen.

Why the industry blurs them anyway

Two well-evidenced reasons. Size: big companies afford a specialist UI designer and a separate UX researcher; smaller ones default to one generalist doing both, because there’s no headcount for two. And the titles were never stable to begin with – Nielsen Norman Group’s own 2019 survey of 693 practitioners found 134 unique job titles in circulation. The same survey is also credited with a further finding – more role specialisation at higher “UX maturity” – so when you meet the blur, you’re often looking at organisational immaturity wearing a job title, not a real claim that the two disciplines are one.

Beauty bends felt usability

Here’s the strange part: the two halves aren’t independent. In 1995, two Hitachi researchers – Kurosu and Kashimura – tested 26 layouts of the same ATM on 252 people, measuring how easy each looked and how easy each actually was. Ratings of beauty correlated with perceived ease of use more strongly than with actual, measured ease of use. People weren’t expressing a preference alongside a usability judgement – they were reading beauty as usability. The finding replicated well enough to earn a name: the aesthetic-usability effect.

The effect has a ceiling – polish buys forgiveness for minor friction, never for a broken flow – and it cuts both ways for you professionally. It means visual craft is a real investment (it buys genuine tolerance for the rough edges that ship anyway). It also means a gorgeous demo deserves more scepticism about its flows, not less – the charm is actively masking problems, including from the people testing it. AI-generated UI arrives polished in seconds; the polish says nothing about whether the flow underneath was ever thought through.

Usability bends what looks are allowed to do

The influence runs the other way too, and on screens it’s absolute. A door handle affords pulling by its physical shape – no label needed. A button on a screen is a flat rectangle of pixels; it affords nothing on its own. Every interactive element in digital UI relies entirely on signifiers – shape, colour, position, shadow, hover, cursor – to communicate that it’s interactive. This is why The Eye’s audit question “does what looks clickable act clickable?” carries so much weight on screens specifically: there’s no physical world underneath to catch you. The signifier is the affordance.
