Brand guidelines

The broader document describing what a brand looks like, sounds like and stands for – across digital and physical surfaces. Upstream of a design system.

Logo usage, colour, typography, voice, photography style, physical and digital application – the “who we are” layer. A design system is the narrower, downstream, code-connected toolkit built from these rules to actually ship product. Put sharply: brand guidelines are rules; a design system is tools.

Each is incomplete without the other: a design system without brand guidelines behind it is just an unmotivated component library, and brand guidelines without a system are principles that never make contact with a shipped interface. Aesop is the clean illustration of the upstream half – a brand so consistent it functions as the reference point competitors get measured against, expressed almost entirely through packaging, retail architecture and voice rather than through a component library. The brand would survive a change of design system; the system alone would not carry the brand.
